Did you know that the game that went on to garner millions of players was more of an idea in the initial launch stages? Yes! This game that stands to earn billions in revenue does have a not so famous initial version quite different from today’s version. Even before we delve into the details about the origin, let’s quickly understand what this game is all about.

What Is LOL (League of Legends)?

LOL is League of Legends and not Laugh out loud in the gaming arena. Similar to other leading battle arena video games, LOL is a multi-player gaming platform. Riot games introduced this game into the virtual platform on October 27, 2009. Ever since its release, millions across the world have downloaded the game. It is compatible with Microsoft Windows and macOS. Riot Games also introduced a mobile compatible version in 2019.

League of Legends In The Making

This game is designed based on the popular online games such as Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Defense of the Ancients, and Pendragon. Two gaming enthusiasts and college buddies Marc Merill and Bradon Beck were quite passionate about creating a new game.
However, they did not have the required technical expertise for the same. Jeff Jew and Bellezza joined the crew as interns to start building this new game. Steve’ Guinsoo’ Feak, who also happened to be one of the original designers of Defense of the Ancients, joined the team. Now the team had the complete expertise and resources to build the game that was only an idea in two individuals’ minds. The team named the initial version as Onslaught.
The lack of funds and not finding publishers delayed the launch of the game. The team also suffered due to the clash of ideals. Creating a clone to DOTA versus having an innovative version of an existing genre was a tough journey. Even though several team members quit, the team still held on to the design and some of their characters. Onslaught transformed into League of Legends – Clash of Fates in early 2008.

Launching League of Legends

The co-founders were successful in raising the required capital through venture capital firms. Though they had decided to launch the game with 20 champions or characters, Beck and Merrill wanted to double the number after considering the competition in the gaming arena. Creating additional champions was no joke, within the limited time. Jeff recruited more paid interns to work on the creation of additional characters.

The Silver Lining

League of Legends was launched as a free-to-play game. They would earn revenue in terms of selling cosmetic items called skins. This proved to be a game-changer, as there were similar genres of games introduced by competitors simultaneously. However, the other games were paid versions, and gamers were keen to try the free to play games. Since then, there has been no looking back for Riot Games. The game has a steady fan following on Youtube; it also has comic series and web series in the making.
